    Stage 1 Update

    John O'Groats to Inverness

First of all, thank you for all the well wishes I have received. They have really helped to lift my spirits. After being battered by a 40 mph headwind until noon today, the wind has eased off, the sun hasn't quite broken through yet though. The going so far has been enjoyable but very tough. Caithness is very exposed to the elements, there are no trees! There is lot of time to think and reflect on Eva and I am enjoying that. Looking out to sea at John O'Groats was very moving. I longed to be holding our 1 yr old girl and pointing out to sea. It was great to be welcomed to John O'Groats by Erik the Viking! OK, time to get some carbs inside me, and off to Inverness, where John Saundry is making a surprise and really welcome appearance.

    End of day 1:

Safely here in Inverness. Very tired after battling into another ferocious headwind for a few hours in the late afternoon, but the sight of Jon Saundry greeting me at the guest house has lifted my spirits no end, and the prospect of a real ale festival at the tavern round the corner and pigging out on stodgy food is making me very happy. Jon has brought me some great clothes to hit Inverness town with, and I look quite the Vincent Vega in the café in Pulp fiction. I had a look at Eva's Justgiving site earlier and feel really humbled at everyone's generosity. It's really touching just how far reaching Eva's life has extended in the impact she has had. OK, time to get stuck into the real ale festival...
